Pain and discomfort can significantly impact you child or teenager’s lifestyle, particularly those actively engaged in sports.

If your highly active child is experiencing pain during sports activities, rest assured you're not alone. Surprisingly, it's often the most athletic and capable youngsters who encounter pain or injury due to their physical endeavours. Ensuring swift assessment and treatment are a must, and that's exactly where The Urban Physio comes in to help you.

In this blog, we delve into two of the most prevalent overuse injuries and learn how The Urban Physio can support your child or teenager back onto the playing field as soon as possible.

Understanding the Unique Needs of Young Athletes:

Children's bodies aren't miniature versions of the adult body. Their growing and developing bodies respond differently and injuries manifest in unique ways. As a parent or guardian, you undoubtedly want to ensure that your loved ones are in the best hands possible and receiving world-class treatment. Through the expertise of our dedicated and experienced physios who have a wealth of sport and paediatric experience, we recognise these important differences and are adept at assessing and treating young athletes. Factors like age, maturity, training experience, and load-bearing capacity are all considered in our tailored approach to treatment.

The Common Causes: Sever’s Disease and Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Sever’s Disease and Osgood-Schlatter Disease are names that might sound intimidating, however, they are simply how we refer to the set of presenting symptoms related to these two common overuse injuries that are observed in growing children and teenagers.

Sever’s Disease: Imagine your child's Achilles tendon, that robust band connecting the calf muscle to the heel bone. Now, factor in the growth plate in their heel. As kids grow, this growth plate can become inflamed, leading to abnormal stress on the Achilles tendon and subsequent pain.

Osgood-Schlatter Disease: The patella tendon, linking the knee cap (patella) to the shin bone (tibia), can be under too much strain in children. This overload results in Osgood-Schlatter Disease, which causes discomfort around the knee area.
