We’ve expanded the range of treatments we offer at The Urban Physio, so over the last few weeks, clients have started to hear us talk about the Elephant, Frog and The Hundred. These aren’t names of endearment for each other; rather they are key moves in our new individualised reformer Pilates sessions.
Reformer Pilates is carried out on reformer equipment, which resembles a bed with springs, sliding carriage, ropes and pulleys. Invented by Joseph Pilates himself, reformer Pilates is still one of the most popular types of Pilates practised today. Using the reformer is a more controlled form of Pilates as it’s all about resistance, which is adjusted by the springs. Depending on what you are looking to achieve, it can be easy and light, or heavy and difficult, so it can suit all types of people including elite athletes, weekend warriors, expectant mothers, people looking to get into shape, and the elderly.
There are many physical and mental benefits of Pilates, including increased:
- Strength;
- Stability and control;
- Flexibility and balance; and
- Body awareness, leading to better posture.
There is also evidence to show that Pilates is an effective rehabilitation technique for a variety circumstances including lower back, knee or hip pain, post-surgical rehabilitation or as a preventive measure for recurring injuries.
Individual treatment is the best form of Pilates therapy, so at The Urban Physio are we focus in on your specific requirements. The versatile machine gives us the ability to progress or regress exercise difficulty as required. Plus, we can adjust exercises to address the entire body or the specific area you would like to work on.
This is where the strange terminology comes in, as we can perform these exercises in various different positions - from lying on your back, side, and stomach, to being seated or on your knees or feet. For example, if you need to reduce the load on certain joints, we can remove the weight bearing component of exercises. And because the machine is so flexible, there’s a lot more variety than traditional Pilates, which makes for a more engaging experience.
